Grossmont College Hyde Gallery, Building 25

Alex DeCosta , (619) 644-7299, alex.decosta@gcccd.edu

The Hyde Art Gallery in Building 25 at Grossmont College is pleased to exhibit the works of six member artists from the San Diego Museun of Art Arsit Guild roster – Christine Finkelson, Dottie Korn Davis, Ellen Dieter, Jeffrey Comulada, Kevin Inman, and Leslie Pierce -- Nov. 1-14. The "pop-up" exhibit refers to the short-term exhibit of the local artists whose works include abstract paintings and photographs, plein air or outdoor painting, and modern sculpture, The idea of pop-up exhibitions started in 2007 in New York City, where exhibit space is limited, particularly for unknown or emerging artists.

SDMAAG’s mission is to bridge the divide between the San Diego Museum of Art and the artist community of San Diego County. Art museums are able to validate an artist’s legacy, so this link is important in areas like San Diego County that is somewhat insulated from the larger art world. SDMAAG also offers new sales platforms for their member artists both online and at sponsored exhibitions, providing artists with new opportunities to  share their latest works, and enhance the public's awareness of local artists.

"My goal with this pop-up exhibition is to afford a new slot in our normal exhibit schedule, and with this open exhibition window, allow faculty, students, or anyone in San Diego County to be able to participate and have their work displayed at the Hyde Art Gallery without having to commit to a full month-long exhibition," said gallery director Alex DeCosta."In the end I hope to establish an ongoing project where students can submit an exhibition proposal at the beginning of the semester and then be able to organize, budget, install, and de-install their own two-week mini exhibitions, one occurring each semester."

An artists' reception for the pop-up exhibit is set for Thursday, Nov.10, from 5-7 p.m., with a live performance by jazz guitarist Jeff Hofmockel and refreshments. Gallery admission is free and open to the public. For additional information, contact gallery director Alex DeCosta at (619) 644-7299 or alex.decosta@gcccd.edu.
