PUBLIC SAFETY - BACKGROUND OF PROJECT

Overview of the DACUM process:

The DACUM (Developing A CurriculUM) process is a nationally recognized, standardized approach to job analysis that produces a complete job profile, including prioritized tasks. It is well-suited for use by community colleges in developing or updating curriculum in public safety occupations. For more information on DACUM, see: http://www.dacum.org/

Few, if any, jobs in public safety have maintained the same skill requirements during the past ten years. It's time to take a fresh look at what we should be teaching our students to succeed in industry. This project is one step in preparing curriculum for public safety occupations. The project results are expected to benefit vocational educators, students and employers.

The project's initial goal was to produce new or updated job competency profiles for 7 occupations within the 14 Public Safety TOP (Taxonomy of Programs) codes. TOP is a common, numeric coding system by which colleges categorize degree and certificate programs and courses on the basis of similarities of their published goals and objectives. TOP codes encompass over 20 disciplines. The Public Safety TOP codes were taken from the following 8 disciplines:

  • Administration of Justice
  • Fire Control Technology
  • Environmental Hazardous Material Control Technology
  • Industrial Safety Technology
  • Logistics
  • Paralegal
  • Ski Patrol Technician
  • Other Public Affairs and Services

Typical Public Safety Occupations include:

  • Police Officer
  • Firefighter
  • Legal Assistant (Judicial Aide)
  • Probation Officer
  • Correctional Officer
  • Arson Investigator
  • Etc

For more information on TOP Codes, see: http://extranet.cccco.edu/Divisions/AcademicAffairs/CurriculumandInstructionUnit/Curriculum.aspx

The 7 occupations profiled were selected based on input from employers and business education faculty/administrators, and in consultation with the Public Safety Statewide Advisory Committee on Public Safety Occupations. Once the 7 occupations were chosen, the project team and a panel of industry experts in each occupation met for two days each to produce the job competency profiles. We  used the DACUM (Developing A Curriculum) process, a nationally-recognized, standardized approach to job analysis that produces a complete job profile, including prioritized tasks. It is well-suited for use by community colleges in developing Job Profiles for public safety occupations. For more information on DACUM, see:
