The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board has unanimously selected Bill Garrett to serve a sixth straight year as president, while Edwin Hiel and Debbie Justeson were elected to serve as fellow board officers for 2013.

Garrett has served since 2008 as board president for the East County district, with about 28,000 students at Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges. The Governing Board meeting got under way Tuesday with the swearing-in of Garrett and Trustee Mary Kay Rosinski, who both ran unopposed in the November election. Garrett began serving on the Governing Board in 2004, while Rosinski joined the board in 2008.

Garrett praised the Governing Board for its cohesiveness and the supportive relationship it has built over the years with the community and the colleges, particularly during financially challenging times. The board’s unanimous decision to place Proposition V, the district’s $398 million facilities bond measure, on the November ballot serves as an example of the board’s united front, Garrett said.

“This is a job I thoroughly enjoy,” the former El Cajon city manager said about his reappointment as board president. “It is a pleasure to support this district, its faculty, staff, administrators and the board itself. I have no problems at all telling people about the absolutely terrific job that is being done by this district and I gladly accept this position.”

Garrett also said that he appreciated the board's confidence in his leadership and complimented the other board members for their dedication to students. Hiel was selected to serve as vice president and Justeson was chosen to serve as board clerk. Both were first elected to the board in 2010.

Chancellor Cindy L. Miles congratulated the board-elected officers.

“Each one brings remarkable talents and such dedication to service,” Miles said. “Collectively, they provide strong district leadership and preservation of the public trust.”

Also serving on the Governing Board is Greg Barr, elected in 2006.  The student trustees are Samantha Elliot for Grossmont College and Mohammed Alyasini for Cuyamaca.

The Governing Board holds its regular meetings on the third Tuesday of each month with the following exceptions for 2013: the fourth Tuesday in July, and the second Tuesday in September and December. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. after a closed session at 5 p.m.  The board meets at Griffin Gate at Grossmont College in even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December) and at the student center at Cuyamaca College in alternate months.
