The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District and Grossmont College were honored Thursday with five PRO Awards from the Community College Public Relations Organization in recognition of exemplary marketing, communications, design and public relations efforts. CCPRO is a statewide professional development and service organization that seeks to promote excellence in California's community college public relations and related professions.

The college district’s awards included those recognizing its efforts to inform the public about Proposition V, Grossmont-Cuyamaca’s $398 million construction bond measure approved by East County voters in November, and Proposition 30, the statewide tax measure for education funding, which also won in the fall election.

The awards presented at CCPRO’s annual conference in Santa Ana:

  • First place to the college district for its news release about a news conference held in May, 2012 by the region’s community college leaders at San Diego City College to focus on the governor’s tax plan to increase education funding.
  • Second place to Grossmont College for its 2011-‘12 Catalog
  • Tie for third place in feature writing to the college district for releases about a Grossmont College ceramics tech’s efforts helping students and a Cuyamaca College track coach who served as a race-walking coach in the 2012 Olympics.
  • Third place to the college district for a Media Success Story, chronicling its information efforts on behalf of Prop. V, the local construction bond measure. A second-place award in the same category was given to MiraCosta College for an October 2012 news conference aboard the USS Midway Museum in which San Diego County community college leaders warned about the effect of budget cuts on  the colleges’ military veterans.

In March, Grossmont College received a national first-place Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for its radio ad promoting the college’s 50th anniversary celebration.
