A free East County Family Fun Day is set for Saturday, May 10, at Grossmont College to celebrate the premiere of a music video featuring local businesses, community members and students promoting Give the Dream, a philanthropic program of the Foundation for Grossmont & Cuyamaca Colleges.

All the makings of a family-friendly party, including a rock climbing wall, inflatable bounce house, face painting, and several popular food trucks, will be on campus from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Give the Dream is a foundation-sponsored program that provides emergency grants in an amount up to $500 to Grossmont or Cuyamaca College students who face an unexpected financial crisis that puts their college attendance at risk. Since 2010, more than $100,000 has been granted to students, who are also provided resources to help them build their money-management skills.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the leading reason students drop out of college is a lack of financial resources. More than 30 percent of college students leave after their first year, frequently because of an unforeseen financial emergency and the lack of a safety net.

Planning for the Give the Dream video began in January, involving foundation staff, students from Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges, and community members. The video was filmed at the East County college campuses and at Grossmont Center in La Mesa, where the public was invited to participate.

Along with students and staff, local business sponsors Barona Resort & Casino, California Coast Credit Union, and Sharp Grossmont Hospital are featured in the video, as are representatives of the Grossmont Healthcare District, Ron Cook Media, Sycuan Casino, and Zavaro Cardiovascular Institute.

Other Give the Dream sponsors include American Medical Response, the Law Offices of Fischbeck & Oberndorfer, Strata Information Group, and Grossmont Schools Federal Credit Union.

“This was a community project to emphasize that Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are here to serve the needs of the public in East County and beyond. There is a reason we are called community colleges,” said John Valencia, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District associate vice chancellor of Advancement and Communications and Foundation CEO.  “This event is not only an opportunity to show the video, but to also thank the East County community for its strong support of our institution.”

Grossmont College is at 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon.
