As part of National Campus Safety Awareness month, both Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges are holding events addressing sexual assault prevention.

From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, Grossmont College Student Health Services and the Student Affairs offices are sponsoring a resource fair, “Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness,” inside Griffin Center, Building 60. Information will be provided on advocacy, counseling and legal services, emergency shelters and prevention and education.

The fair will be staffed by the San Diego Center for Community Solutions, a nonprofit agency which operates the only rape crisis center in the city of San Diego, along with a countywide 24-hour bilingual crisis helpline. The agency also provides emergency domestic violence shelters, hospital and court accompaniment, as well as legal and counseling services. CCS also works with local campuses to provide prevention programs.

From 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, Cuyamaca College’s Health and Wellness Center is teaming with the center to present “Stand Up and Speak Out Against Relationship Violence,” an interactive discussion among students on consent and sexual safety.  The discussion and information tables staffed by CCS and sheriff’s deputies providing public safety services to the campuses will be in Room I-207 of the student center.

College campuses have stepped up efforts to increase awareness about sexual assault after a White House task force last April recommended actions that institutions could take to protect victims.

Lori Senini, Cuyamaca’s Health Services supervisor, said that the hope is to raise public awareness of the issue of sexual consent to the level of awareness relating to domestic violence.

“Sexual consent is a hazy topic,” she said. “We want to help students and the public to have a clearer picture of this serious issue.”

Both college events are free and open to the public. Grossmont College is at 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon. Cuyamaca College is at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in the community of Rancho San Diego.
