Tim Corcoran, a leader in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District’s human resources department since 2010, has been named vice chancellor of human resources following a nationwide search.

Corcoran joined the East County college district four years ago as the director of employee and labor relations, and was promoted to associate vice chancellor of human resources in January 2012. He twice served as interim vice chancellor during leadership transitions, and the skill he ably demonstrated during those times made him the best candidate for the top-level post, Chancellor Cindy L. Miles said.

“Consistently, Tim displays his talents for thoughtful leadership and problem-solving in negotiation processes with employee groups and in individual relations with employees,” Miles said. She noted that his acumen with collective- bargaining negotiations played a big part in the recent contract agreements signed for the first time in several years by all three of the district’s employee unions.

“He is a trusted and respected member of our district leadership team and has helped lead through the lean and stressful years of the recession,” Miles said. “Tim has been a consistent champion of positivity and support for our goal to make the district the best possible place to work and learn.”

A longtime professional in the field of human resources, Corcoran’s hiring at the district marked his first job in the public sector. He previously served as human resources manager for Carl Zeiss Vision and KB Home, both in San Diego, and the Pepsi Bottling Group in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

He describes his shift into higher education administration as the most rewarding experience in his professional life.

“I am motivated by the feeling that every day we are helping improve lives through education,” he said. “It is an incredible feeling to know that we are helping students by providing them with development and helping them reach their maximum potential. The unity and teamwork that every employee shares in striving for our common goal of student success is something that I have never experienced in an organization.”

Corcoran received his associate degree from Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan; his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan; and his master’s degree in labor relations and human resources from Michigan State University. He is a member of the Society for HR Management and the Association of Chief Human Resource Officers.

In 2014, Corcoran was recognized for his outstanding leadership when he was selected to receive the national John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College.
