Register now for spring semester classes

From accounting to xeriscaping, East County’s community colleges offer a full spectrum of classes, and with the new semester starting Jan. 25, now is the time to register at Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges.

The cost of the courses is $46 per unit, with most classes offering three units of college credit. Online registration for regular semester classes ends Jan. 22, 2016.

A wealth of traditional, online and hybrid classes are offered at both colleges, many of which satisfy general education requirements needed for university transfer.

Interested in learning about the roots of global terrorism or the complex geopolitics shaping the fractious Middle East? Grossmont College is offering Human and Cultural Geography: A Global Adventure (Geography 130). Do you have the great American novel percolating in your brain? The English program offers a writers’ workshop series, Novel Writing I through IV, (English 175-178) to help you develop your writing chops.

The Secret Life of Plants (Bio. 122) is a Cuyamaca College class that covers contemporary topics in plant biology, including the basics of genetic engineering and biotechnology. Have you always dreamed of starting your own business? A Cuyamaca class, Entrepreneurship: Starting and Developing a Business (Business 111), will give you the know-how on developing startup monies, siting locations, devising a business plan and more.

In addition to GE courses offered through such programs as English, history, math, foreign language, music, and science, the colleges also offer specialized training and instruction to prepare for jobs in health professions, computers, public safety, automotive technology, business, and much more.

Grossmont College has a fitness specialist program for students aspiring for a career in the fitness industry. Earn a Grossmont College certificate and prepare for national fitness certification exams needed to become a personal trainer or group exercise leader.

For die-hard fans of TV’s “CSI” who dream of a law-enforcement career sleuthing cases in a crime lab, Grossmont College offers Forensic Chemistry (Chemistry 113), designed specifically for students enrolled in the Administration of Justice program.

Grossmont College will host a Career Technical Education/Workforce Development Open House from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 9. Information about career programs and courses will be available, as well as on-the-spot applications, counselors, tours and more. Cuyamaca College’s well-known automotive technology program has a long partnership with Ford Motor Co., providing classroom instruction and on-the-job training (Auto. 197) for students enrolled in the Ford ASSET program.

Another career-technical education program at Cuyamaca College is the Cisco Networking Academy, preparing students for entry-level and high-skill information technology jobs. After one semester, students will be ready for Cisco CCENT certification needed for that entry-level job. Combine that with another semester for the CCNA certification and even higher levels of IT employment. New students are required to go through orientation, scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, in Room E-205 in the Business and Technology Building.

Both colleges are also offering personal development classes to help students improve their learning and study skills, as well as make good career decisions.
