The Grossmont College pool will be transformed into an underwater maze April 16 for the fifth annual SeaPerch San Diego’s Regional Qualifying Tournament.

Between 75 and 100 middle- and high-school students will be on campus to operate their student-built robotic submarines in a high-tech competition where they attempt to release and capture Ping-Pong balls from containers positioned in deep water. This is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education competition.

Commanding Officer Capt. Kurt J. Rothenhause of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command will preside at opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. The competition from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. is free and open to the public.

U.S. Navy divers will be on hand to assist with the competition and display underwater remotely operated vehicles and other high-tech dive gear.

The tournament is a qualifying event for the National SeaPerch competition May 20-21 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. For more information about the National competition and the SeaPerch program, visit the SeaPerch website at http://www.seaperch.org/

The volunteer group SeaPerch San Diego, under the auspices of the Maritime Alliance, has been training teachers to lead students in robotic submarine building for the past seven years.
