The Grossmont College Piano Faculty Ensemble Concert, an inaugural event featuring Ken Ard, Melonie Grinnell, Philip "Jay Jay" Lim, Marion Rodewald and Bryan Verhoye, is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the Grossmont College Recital Hall (Building 26, Room 220).
The concert will feature the piano faculty in solo and duo forms, culminating in a full ensemble piece. The music will include classical, contemporary, popular and jazz, along with some vocals and original compositions.
Ard, for example, is performing "The Delta Queen,” an original piece he wrote for a musical theater production he wrote and produced in New Orleans. Equally comfortable playing classical music, Ard also plans to play Mozart's "Sonata in D Major" for four hands with Verhoye, and Debussy's "Petite Suite" with Grinnell, the college’s director of piano studies.
Grinnell said she hopes the faculty concert becomes an annual tradition to showcase the wide-ranging talent of her colleagues, most of whom are performing artists, as well as top-notch educators. Grinnell is herself familiar to the San Diego music scene, with an extensive list of performance experiences in jazz, classical and musical theater. She has performed in well-known San Diego jazz venues and is the former musical director and pit keyboardist for Starlight Civic Theater, the San Diego Repertory Theater, and the Lawrence Welk Theater.
Tickets to the Grossmont College concert are $10, general; $8, seniors; and $5, students. Call the music department for additional information at 619-644-7254.
Grossmont College is at 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon.
