A shower of 2,000 golf balls is anticipated for the May 6 Brad Daluiso Golf Classic at the Sycuan Golf Resort, an annual fundraiser hosted by the former NFL kicker for the Grossmont College athletic program.

The golf balls will be falling from above at 4 p.m. as balls purchased by supporters are dropped from a helicopter hovering about 50 feet in the air. The lucky winner whose numbered ball lands in or closest to the hole – in this case, hole No. 1 at Willow Glen Golf Course -- gets a $1,000 Sprouts gift card. Other prizes include a Sonos PLAYBAR sound bar, Sycuan overnight stay with golf, Padres tickets and a TaylorMade M2 460 driver.

And you don’t have to play in the tourney or be present to win – just purchase $5 for one ball, $20 for five, $50 for 15, $100 for 40 or $250 for 125. You can obtain the purchase form at www.foundation.gcccd.edu/bdgc .The deadline for purchasing the balls is May 4. Cash, credit cards and checks will be accepted for ball purchases at the tournament until 3 p.m.

The golf classic, now in its 13th year, draws about 100 golfers annually and has raised more than $200,000 for Grossmont College Athletics and Exercise Science and Wellness programs. The event is sponsored by the Foundation for Grossmont & Cuyamaca Colleges, the nonprofit organization that supports students, faculty and staff at both colleges through scholarships and educational equipment, supplies and programs.

“The helicopter ball drop will be a fun and novel way to further support students and these great programs,” said Daluiso, a member of the foundation board of directors.

The chopper and pilot are from Gillespie Field-based Raven Helicopters, and the balls are being provided by Sycuan. Resort staffers will also pick up the balls afterwards and report the winner.

Daluiso, who was introduced to collegiate football while he attended Grossmont College, said the golf tournament is a way for him to help other student athletes. “I wanted to find a way to give back,” he said.

Daluiso played football at Grossmont College until he graduated in 1988, and then went on to UCLA for two years before beginning his 10-year National Football League career.

He played for the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos and his last eight years for the New York Giants. He retired in 2000 as the Giants’ all-time most accurate kicker and the second-all-time leading scorer in the team’s history.

In 2000, Daluiso was awarded the Ed Block Courage Award, presented to the team member displaying exemplary leadership, courage and community service. In 2012, he was selected as one of five outstanding community college alumni in the state by the Community College League of California.

Today, Daluiso is a senior vice president, private wealth advisor, at Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management.
