Cuyamaca College names new VP of Instruction

EL CAJON – Jeanie Machado Tyler has been named the new Vice President of Instruction at Cuyamaca College. Tyler, most recently the Dean for Arts, Humanities, Communications & Telecommunications at San Diego City College, joined the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District this month.

Tyler comes to Cuyamaca after a long career at San Diego City College. Since 2008 she has held numerous administrative positions, and for the past decade she has also worked as an instructor of Business Studies.

A resident of El Cajon since 2008, Tyler said she was drawn to Cuyamaca in part because of its strong connection to the communities it serves. She said she’s eager to make meaningful connections on and off campus.

“Since coming to San Diego, I’ve really been looking for what I had at my first institution and that was really a connectedness with the direct community,” said Tyler, who began her career as an administrator at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. By making personal connections with people, Tyler said she hopes to build partnerships in the community that will serve the needs of Cuyamaca students. “I’ll know those people because it’s the community in which I’m living,” she said.

Tyler has had a long administrative career supporting equity in higher education and off-campus learning. She is also a strong advocate for Career Technical Education (CTE), to help students develop strong workplace skills and assist current professionals in gaining additional training to advance their careers. As she settles into her new position, Tyler said she is also eager to learn about the make-up of students who attend Cuyamaca, to support a mix of course offerings - in person, online, and hybrid - that will best serve their needs.

Tyler joined San Diego City College in the fall of 2008 as Director of Off-Campus Programs, and in subsequent years held numerous administrative positions. These also included Acting Dean of Student Equity; and Associate Dean, Strong Workforce, among others.

Before joining San Diego City College, Tyler managed off-campus programs as an administrator at Allan Hancock College.

In addition to the many positions Tyler has held over the years, she has also volunteered her time and expertise to numerous volunteer organizations, many connected to higher education but others including Habitat for Humanity, the Rotary Club, YMCA, the United Way, and the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau in Lompoc.
