Mary Garcia, counselor ,

Cuyamaca College's Student Affairs and Equity and Engagement offices are sponsoring the first Annual Cesar Chavez celebration 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, April 7, on the Grand Lawn.

The free event honoring the legacy of the late labor leader and civil rights activist is open to the public and will feature music, dancers and keynote speaker Fernando Vega, who just finished portraying the Cowardly Lion in the musical, "Oz," at Lamb's Players Theatre, and was a 2015 Craig Noel nominee for best featured performance by a male in a musical. Vega regards as his most notable performance his singing on National Public Radio with his hero, the legendary father of Chicano theater, Luis Valdez. Vega has studied in London, San Diego and Tijuana and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater.

In addition to the performances and the speaker, the celebration will include traditional Mexican "taquiza," sometimes referred to as Mexican street tacos.
