Border Corrido: Music of Resistance

September 26, 2018

12:30 PM - 01:30 PM

Cuyamaca College Student Center I-207

Cuyamaca College's Diversity Dialogues continues Wednesday, Sept. 26, with "The Border Corrido: Music of the Resistance," from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Student Center in Room I-207. The free presentation by John Escobedo, director of Title V Activities, focuses on the book, "With His Pistol in His Hand," a historical narrative of a musical ballad evolving into the form of the corrido. Author Americo Paredes tells the story of Gregorio Cortez, the man and the legend, in fascinating detail. Deftly woven into the corrido of Cortez are interpretations of the border country, history, people, and their folkways. This free workshop is open to the public and will include the music of the border corrido and discussion of its development into a musical genre imbricated in history, folk culture and marginal heroes.
