East County college district keeps record intact of multiple clean audits

But those in the number-crunching business are quick to point out that the top marks that Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District received this month from auditors for the seventh consecutive year are not to be taken for granted.

09/29/2010 - The continued lack of a state budget has hit home in the East County as the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District runs short of revenues to make payroll. The September payment owed by the state is one of the largest of the year and its delay has forced the district to borrow $5 million from restricted funds.

Robert Garber interim Cuyamaca College president
09/07/2010 - Robert Garber, a 33-year veteran of California community colleges, has accepted a one-year appointment as interim president of Cuyamaca College. Garber, who retired in 2009 as president of Los Angeles Pierce College, returned to work in August, first as interim vice president of student services for Cuyamaca College and now as Cuyamaca College interim president.

08/27/2010 - Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Chancellor Cindy Miles welcomed California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott to Cuyamaca College Thursday for a candid discussion with the region’s community college and business leaders on topics ranging from the budget crisis to a bill just passed that smooths the transition from the two-year campuses to state universities.

Museum Presents Hieroglyphs Workshop
08/18/2010 - The Heritage of the Americas Museum on the campus of Cuyamaca College in El Cajon, California, offers a special program including both a hieroglyphs workshop and an extended tour of Egypt where students will practice their new skills, reading the ancient writing they find on museum artifacts, or in temples and tombs. Participants may attend the workshop or the tour, or both.

08/10/2010 - Barbara Blanchard has been named vice president of academic affairs at Grossmont College. Blanchard comes to Grossmont College from American River College, one of four colleges in the Los Rios Community College District in Sacramento, Calif.

Grossmont College new nursing simulation labs
08/05/2010 - Vanessa Cordova, newly hired nurse at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, quickly assesses the situation. A 46-year-old patient, J. Smith, had been admitted after collapsing at home and losing consciousness. A heart patient, Smith is hooked up to a monitor, looking pale, but otherwise resting calmly while Cordova, the incoming day nurse, begins her morning assessment, studying his medical chart and taking his blood pressure. Also in the room are Smith’s wife, a second nurse and a certified nurse’s assistant, who is busy cleaning the patient and readying him for breakfast.

Steve Baker named Grossmont College dean
07/20/2010 - Steve Baker has been named dean of the department of arts, languages and communication at Grossmont College. Baker began his career with the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District as a music instructor in 1985, and has taught at both Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges. At Grossmont, he was music department chair and interim dean before his latest appointment.

06/29/2010 - Dr. Stuart Savin, currently out on medical leave, will be returning to Pennsylvania with his family and, as of July 1, will no longer serve as president of Cuyamaca College.

06/21/2010 - Upon approval of the Governing Board, Tim Flood has been named Vice President, Administrative Services at Grossmont College.

Statewide Funding Cuts Force Severe Summer Course Reductions
06/17/2010 - Higher education funding cuts due to the California state budget crisis have forced the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District to severely reduce summer course sections, despite increased demands for classes as students retrain for new careers and complete general education requirements to transfer to four-year universities and colleges.
