AEDs
AEDs - Automated External Defibrillators
Sudden cardiac arrest is a life threatening emergency that occurs when the heart stops beating regularly. If not treated within minutes, sudden cardiac arrest can quickly lead to death. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), CPR and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) provides the best chance to save a life.
GCCCD provides AEDs in buildings around Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges. AEDs are noted with a red heart icon on the Public Safety webpage AED Location Maps (by college).
In the event of a campus emergency, immediately call 911.
AEDs may be used by anyone, from the general public to medical professionals, as long as the rescuer follows the device's audible prompts (AEDs use voice prompts, lights and text to give instructions to the rescuer).
AED Instructions and Information:
Instructions to use an AED:
1) Call 911 first.
2) Open the AED and follow the audible prompts/instructions.
3) Open the electrode pad package.
4) Place one pad on the person's bare upper right hand chest as shown on the diagram.
5) Place one pad on the person’s bare lower left hand side's abdomen as shown on the diagram.
6) Do not touch the person while the AED is analyzing.
7) Follow the AED's prompts to apply a shock or give CPR.
8) The AED will check to see if the person needs a shock and will automatically administer the shock (or tell you when to administer the shock). If AED shock is not needed, the AED will instruct you to give CPR.
If a shock is needed, make sure no one is touching the person and press the shock button, then immediately resume CPR.
9) Continue to follow the AED prompts and administer CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive.
AEDs are lightweight portable devices that deliver an electric shock through the chest to the heart when it detects an abnormal rhythm and changes the rhythm back to normal.

In the event of an emergency involving a cardiac arrest, an AED, along with CPR saves lives. According to the American Heart Association, a person's chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops up to 10% every minute a normal heartbeat is not restored. CPR and AEDs can double or triple the person's chance of survival.
AEDs may be used by anyone, from the general public to medical professionals, as long as they follow the device's prompted instructions. These rescuers are called Volunteer Responders and have legal protection by the ‘Good Samaritan Law’ when using the AED in good faith to help a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.
